Will Snowdon retires!

Will Snowdon retires!

After 14 years of great service to the club Will Snowdon has hung up the boots.

Here is a tribute to Will written by John Spowart and some career stats also. We wish will all the best for his future, and of course he'll be welcome back at Newtown Park anytime.

After almost fourteen years with over four hundred appearances wearing the blue and white of Bo’ness United, Will Snowdon has decided to call it a day, closing a successful final chapter in his football playing career.

Starting at Ipswich Town, Will moved to Scotland playing for Livingston, Partick Thistle and Stranraer before arriving at Newtown Park in July 2007. His first task was to help the BUs restore their Super League status after being relegated the previous season and Bo’ness were duly promoted at the first time of asking, Will became an established member of the team being made captain the following season.

Bo’ness were almost returned to the Premier division right away but having just avoided the drop no one around the club, including Will, could have known what was to follow. Allan McGonigal was appointed as Manager, and under the new regime, Will was an important member of the squad that enjoyed an incredible season, the BUs winning their first League Title in forty years. The following year the BUs retained their Title as well as reaching the semi final of the Scottish Junior Cup and Will was yet again a stalwart in what was an epic campaign. Will reached one hundred appearances early in that season and continued as a great favourite with the fans.

Now the winner of three trophies with the BUs, Will reached the two hundred appearance mark early in the 2013/2014 season where more silverware beckoned. The BUs lifted the Super League Title for an amazing third time in five seasons, the club’s best performance by far since their early years.

The League Title had earned Bo’ness a further place in the Scottish Cup and November 2014 saw Will play his part in two of the most memorable games in BU history, the classic Scottish Cup tussle against SPFL side Elgin City. Bo’ness came back to earn a draw in Elgin, despite being three goals down at the break and Will notched a strike in the thrilling replay at Newtown Park, the BUs winning by the odd goal in nine.

Another trophy was secured the following season, an East of Scotland Cup triumph in May 2016 and then it was a well-deserved testimonial year for Will that included a game against Auchinleck Talbot in July 2017. During that time Will reached the three hundred games mark.

The 2017/2018 season turned out to be the last season for Bo’ness in the Juniors, moving to the East of Scotland League with most of the other East Region Super League sides. A successful first campaign saw the BUs make sure of their place in the top division with trophy number six for Will, a League Cup winner’s medal, gained against Musselburgh Athletic late in the campaign.

Strange days were to descend on the world and football was also affected, the 2019/2020 season cut short in March due to the Corona Virus pandemic. It proved bitter sweet for Bo’ness, unable to complete the programme but awarded the East of Scotland Premier Division Title by way of the points per game calculation. The final match was a League Cup defeat at Penicuik, Will scoring a consolation in what was his four hundredth appearance for the BUs. Another covid curtailed season followed, play suspended in January the season declared over in late March.

This is not be the way Will would have chosen to finish his time at Bo’ness United but he can be proud of his contribution to the BUs during one of the most successful periods in the club’s history.

Will Snowdon, leaving Bo’ness United marks the end of an era for both the player and the club and it will take some getting used to not hearing that distinctive accent around Newtown Park. However, it is hoped the supporters and the player get the opportunity to renew acquaintances in the future as Will makes a return, even if it’s only to see how his old team are doing. Good luck and all the best to Will.
